Anti-matter is the mirror image of matter. The version of the electron for anti-matter is the positron, which has the opposite charge and reversed properties. When you put together an electron and a positron, they will annihilate each other and release gamma rays—the preferred propulsion in science fiction space ships.
The universe started with equal parts of matter and antimatter. Now almost all stuff in the universe is normal matter. This asymmetry happened in the first fraction of a nanosecond after the start of the universe. What happened is still a mystery for science. But it did and today is not a void.
